UNBC workers overwhelmingly approve strike action

PRINCE GEORGE–CUPE support workers at UNBC have voted 91 per cent in favour of strike action. The vote was taken over the last week and tallied this morning. CUPE 3799 represents more than 300 support workers at the University of Northern BC. Turnout for the vote was 75 per cent.

VICTORIA—Two CUPE locals at the University of Victoria have served 72-hour strike notice.  CUPE 917 and 951 served notice at the BC Labour Relations Board Monday after the employer balked at continuing mediated talks.

VANCOUVER – CUPE 116 has returned to the bargaining table with a mediator.  The UBC local met with the employer on Friday at the Labour Relations Board with mediator Mark Atkinson present.

VANCOUVER—CUPE Local 116 has served 72-hour strike notice at UBC. The 2,000 member local served notice this morning after contract talks stalled.

Strong strike votes at UBC/Uvic

VANCOUVER – CUPE Locals 116 and 2278 have secured strong strike votes from their members.  The members of local 116 voted 89 per cent in favour of a strike mandate for their bargaining team while 2278 members provided an 81 per cent vote in favour.

CUPE Universities Coordinated Bargaining Committee

In March 2010, 8 of the 10 locals that make up CUPE’s Universities Coordinated Bargaining Committee (UCBC) served notice to bargain. The other two followed shortly thereafter.

The UCBC meets regularly to remain coordinated, share progress, and monitor the status of bargaining in other education sectors and provincial unions.

CUPE 3338-5 members ratify new agreement, lockout comes to an end

BURNABY—The members of CUPE 3338-5 that work for the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) have ratified a new agreement. The agreement was reached on Friday October 7, 2011 with the assistance of a mediator. Now that both parties have voted in favour of ratification, the lockout is over and staff are back at work. The lockout began on July 10, 2011.

The new three-year agreement protects the wages and job security of all current staff and includes a 1 per cent increase in the third year.

SFU Lockout hits day 78, Board members vote to line their own pockets

BURNABY—Today marks day 78 of the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) lockout at SFU. It is also the day the SFU community learned that the SFSS Board of Directors quietly voted to double their compensation with the money saved by locking out their own staff.

Cupe picket lines up at SFU Surrey

SURREY – An expanded picket line by the Canadian Union of Public Employees, as part of the ongoing labour dispute with the Simon Fraser Student Society, is up at SFU Surrey (SFU Surrey Mezzanine, 250-13450 102 Avenue), starting at 830am today. Hundreds rally for locked out SFU staff

BURNABY—CUPE hosted a rally yesterday, attended by hundreds of people to support the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) staff, members of CUPE Local 3338. The staff have been locked out by their employer since July 10.

The rally brought together students, supporters and CUPE members from across the Lower Mainland.
