Striking CUPE workers to shut down SFU

BURNABY—CUPE support workers at Simon Fraser University will be holding a one-day strike at the main Burnaby campus tomorrow (Thursday) from 8am-4pm. 

Tomorrow’s picketing of buildings on Burnaby Mountain will be followed by a one-day walkout at the SFU Surrey campus on Friday and a shutdown of SFU Harbour Centre in downtown Vancouver on Saturday and Sunday. The Burnaby campus daycare will not be picketed.

UBC Teaching Assistants launch strike action

VANCOUVER—CUPE Local 2278 members hit the bricks today, picketing outside the Jack Bell building on campus at UBC.  The job action started at 3pm, when their 72-hour strike notice took effect.  The Canadian Union of Public Employees local represents 2,300 teaching assistants, tutors, markers and language assistants at the University of British Columbia.

CUPE and Royal Roads sign tentative deal

VICTORIA—CUPE support workers at Royal Roads University have reached a new tentative agreement. The no-concessions, four-year deal must still be ratified by the members of CUPE 3886 and by the university administration.

CUPE workers reject SFU ‘stall tactics’

BURNABY—Frustrated by SFU’s refusal to negotiate, the union representing clerical and other support staff is pulling out of pension discussions.  CUPE 3338 says it will no longer help the university with its ailing pension plan until it has a new collective agreement for CUPE members.

CUPE support workers reach deal at UNBC

PRINCE GEORGE—CUPE Local 3799 workers have a tentative new collective agreement with the University of Northern British Columbia. The deal was reached late Tuesday and must still be ratified by both sides.

CUPE support workers settle at TRU

KAMLOOPS—CUPE support workers at Thompson Rivers have reached a tentative collective agreement with the university. The bargaining committee for the 700 members of CUPE Local 4879 reports that the no-concessions deal includes two percent wage increases in each of the final two years. The first two years have no wage hikes, in keeping with the provincial government’s Net Zero Mandate for public sector workers in 2010 and 2011.

CUPE clerical workers ratify deal at UBC

VANCOUVER—The members of CUPE Local 2950 at the University of British Columbia have ratified a new collective agreement. The vote tallied this afternoon was 90% in favour of the four-year deal. 

CUPE 2950 represents1,500 clerical, library and hospital staff at UBC.  They signed a tentative collective agreement last week. The deal includes wage increases of 0-0-2-2% over four years.

SFU Downtown to face picket lines

VANCOUVER—Frustrated by SFU’s refusal to negotiate, members of CUPE Local 3338 will set up picket lines on its downtown Vancouver campus tomorrow.  Close to 70 CUPE members at SFU Harbour Centre and SFU Woodward’s will walk off the job and picket Friday morning starting at 8:30 am. Other campus buildings will not be affected.

Talks, job action continue at BC universities

BURNABY—CUPE contract talks are scheduled this week at four BC universities. Dates have been set at Thompson Rivers University, the University of Northern British Columbia, the University of Victoria and UBC.  Job actions continue at several campuses ranging from overtime bans to picket lines.

CUPE clerical workers at UBC sign tentative deal

VANCOUVER – CUPE Local 2950, representing 1,500 clerical, library and hospital staff at the University of British Columbia, has signed a tentative collective agreement. The deal reached early this afternoon is for 0-0-2-2% wage increases over four years ending in 2014. 

Highlights of the deal: 
• No concessions
• No wage increases for the first two years under the provincial Net Zero Mandate
• 2% wage increase retroactive to April 1, 2012
