Community swims to celebrate May Day

SUMMERLAND—The Summerland Aquatic and Fitness Centre was filled with swimmers at a CUPE-sponsored community swim on Saturday, May 1.

CUPE Local 523 Okanagan Skaha sponsored the free public swim at the Summerland Aquatic Centre and president Zoe Magnus said that many expressed their appreciation for this purely positive event. “It is a great way to celebrate May Day and CUPE Community Action Day,” said Magnus.

Under the watchful eye of CUPE 1136 lifeguards, 75 people enjoyed a safe and fun free swim, cookies, fruit leather, and balloons for all.

CUPE BC general vice-president Paul Faoro stopped by after attending the South Okanagan Boundary Labour Council celebration at Gyro Park in Penticton.

This was just one of the events supported by CUPE members across B.C. to mark May Day 2010 as a Community Action Day with locals and district councils hosting creative community events.
