Governments continue to shortchange Canadian women

BURNABY-Women in B.C. and across Canada have a lot of reasons to take to the streets on International Women’s Day, March 8. And CUPE members will be participating in IWD events across the province. Check the CUPE BC events page for up-to-date information.

While the Campbell government continues to ignore domestic violence, as evidenced in B.C. solicitor general Kash Heed’s action plan released in late January, our federal government’s record is no better.

In December 2009, the B.C. CEDAW Group made a submission to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. The submission was in response to Canada’s Follow-up Report on Progress in Implementing Priority Recommendations made by the Committee in its 2008 Concluding Observations on Canada. The title Nothing to Report says it all in terms of the lack of progress on priority areas for Canadian women.

To put today’s struggle in context, check out a site about famous Canadian women that offers a wide range of links and other resources for those interested in the history of women in Canada.
