CUPE welcomes public sewage campaigner

VICTORIA - CUPE welcomes Gilles Larose as the new campaign coordinator for the ‘Keep It Public’ sewage treatment campaign in the Capital Regional District. Gilles will be monitoring local events, advocating for public sewage treatment, and working with CUPE locals, the Greater Victoria Water Watch Coalition and others who support public sewage treatment in the CRD.Outgoing campaign coordinator Kim Manton with Victoria councillor Phillipe Lucas, Gilles Larose and Saanich councillor Judy Brownoff at the 2010 Labour Day picnic.Outgoing campaign coordinator Kim Manton with Victoria councillor Phillipe Lucas, Gilles Larose and Saanich councillor Judy Brownoff at the 2010 Labour Day picnic.

Gilles is passionate about public services and says that he has been impressed by the strong support for the CRD, and not private corporations, to operate new sewage treatment.

“The CRD board of directors has given the B.C. government a business plan that will see public operation of most, if not all, sewage treatment. Now we are waiting for the provincial government response,” says Larose.

Having lived in the Greater Victoria area for more than 35 years, Gilles is now a resident of Saanich. He works as an equipment operator for School District 61 (Greater Victoria schools). He is the president of CUPE 382, representing outside workers in the district. Gilles replaces Kim Manton of CUPE 1978, who previously served as campaign coordinator.

Please contact Gilles for more information about the campaign. (glarose@shaw.ca)
