CoDevelopment Canada recognized for outstanding contribution to human rights

VANCOUVER—CoDevelopment Canada has been named the 2012 recipient of the Renate Shearer Award from the United Nations Association in Canada, Vancouver Branch and the BC Human Rights Coalition.

In selecting CoDev for the award, the presenters cited the organization’s work with its Latin American partners as impressive and in need of recognition.

CoDev to host dialogue on Colombian conflict

VANCOUVER—The continuing controversy surrounding the Canada-Colombia free trade agreement will be a prominent subject on September 21-22, as CoDevelopment Canada hosts “Land, Trade & Democracy,” a dialogue about the Colombian conflict, Canada-Colombia relations and our role as Canadians.

The event will be held on Friday, September 21, from 7:00 to 9:30 pm at Simon Fraser University’s downtown campus at Harbour Centre, and on Saturday, September 22, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm at SFU’s Wosk Centre for Dialogue.

CUPE Members meet with Swaziland trade unionist and HIV activist

 


BURNABY– In her inspiring life, trade unionist Siphiwe Hlophe has been on the frontlines of Swaziland’s labour, women’s rights and HIV movements. This week CUPE members and staff had the opportunity to meet her and learn firsthand about the grassroots struggle against HIV in Swaziland.

The event was organized by CUPE BC Division, and chaired by Mark Hancock.

“¡Viva Mexico!” screening to support CoDev filmfest

VANCOUVER—This Thursday’s Vancouver premiere of “¡Viva Mexico!” at Langara College offers a tantalizing hint of what will be on offer at the eleventh annual World Community Film Festival (February 10-12, 2012).

This powerful film, which documents the journey of Zapatista leader Subcomandante Marcos across Mexico in the “Other Campaign,” celebrates the struggle for land and dignity.  The film’s producer, Daniela Contreras, will be in attendance for its Vancouver premiere, to be screened in Room A130 at Langara College on Thursday (November 24th) at 7pm.
