Event marking International Women’s Day to call on premier to bring in child care plan

VANCOUVER—Mothers and toddlers from throughout the Lower Mainland are expected to converge on Christy Clark’s MLA constituency office on the morning after International Women’s Day, in a call for B.C.’s premier to introduce a $10 a day childcare plan long recommended by child care advocates.

The “Strollers for Child Care” event (also being referred to as “Stroller Derby” and “Stroller Brigade”) , takes place on Saturday, March 9 beginning at 11 a.m. in the southeast corner of Jericho Beach Park in the Kitsilano neighbourhood of Vancouver.

Everyone is invited. Parents are encouraged to bring their kids, bikes, strollers and noisemakers. After the Carnival Band leads the crowd in “making noise for daycare,” a march will proceed to Clark’s office at West 4th and Dunbar at 11:30 a.m.

The event is being organized by the BC Federation of Labour, the Coalition of Child Care Advocates of BC, the BCGEU and CUPE.
