Municipal workers donate $5000 to Shuswap area charities coping with COVID-19

SALMON ARM – Municipal workers from Salmon Arm, Enderby, Sicamous and the Columbia Shuswap Regional District are donating $5000 to local charities dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. CUPE 1908, representing over 180 workers in the Shuswap region, are making the donations to help the most vulnerable in their communities during the public health crisis.

“CUPE 1908 members are proud members of the communities we serve, and we’ve seen first-hand how many of our neighbours are struggling right now,” says Loreen Matousek, a worker for the Columbia Shuswap Regional District and president of CUPE 1908. “We want our friends and neighbours to know CUPE 1908 members are here for our communities – we are in this together.”

CUPE 1908 is donating $1000 each to the SAFE Society, the Salvation Army Salmon Arm, and to the Salmon Arm, Enderby and Sicamous Food Banks. In addition to the donations, CUPE 1908 members are collecting non-perishable food items in their workplaces and at home for the area food banks.

“Our union local has a long-standing tradition of donating to these organizations, and we know how important the work they do is to our communities. And it’s especially true during this public health crisis,” says Matousek. “They do so much good work every day, and CUPE 1908 members are proud to support their work in helping us all weather the COVID-19 pandemic.”

CUPE 1908 represents municipal and regional district workers with the City Enderby, City of Salmon Arm, District of Sicamous, Sicamous Recreation Centre, and the Columbia Shuswap Regional District.
