District of Coldstream and union for municipal workers to go to mediation

COLDSTREAM โ€“ The District of Coldstream and CUPE Local 626, which represents municipal workers, will begin mediation onย Monday, after bargaining talks broke down in August, says the union.ย

Theโ€ฏBCโ€ฏLabour Relations Board appointed mediatorย Grant McArthurย to mediate contract talks betweenย theย two sides.ย

โ€œAffordability is a real issue for our members, as it is for many residents of the Okanagan. We are hopeful we can find resolution through mediation and achieveย a fair deal,โ€ saidย CUPE Local 626ย President Bryce deย Dood.ย

Talks broke down in August when the district sought aย five-yearย wage settlement that was both lower than the provincial average and surrounding municipalities.ย The union had alreadyย moved off of 10 key proposals to get a deal.ย

โ€œWe are confident we can get a contract that moves our members forwards, not backwards,โ€ said deย Dood.ย ย

The current agreement expiredย December 31, 2018.ย

CUPE is Canadaโ€™s largest union. Local 626 represents some 335 municipal workers in the District of Coldstream, located just southย of Vernon in the Okanagan. These include those who fix roads, do sewer and storm maintenance, provide planning, RCMP support services, administration and parks workers.ย
