CoDev to host dialogue on Colombian conflict

VANCOUVER—The continuing controversy surrounding the Canada-Colombia free trade agreement will be a prominent subject on September 21-22, as CoDevelopment Canada hosts “Land, Trade & Democracy,” a dialogue about the Colombian conflict, Canada-Colombia relations and our role as Canadians.

The event will be held on Friday, September 21, from 7:00 to 9:30 pm at Simon Fraser University’s downtown campus at Harbour Centre, and on Saturday, September 22, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm at SFU’s Wosk Centre for Dialogue.

This event will bring local Colombians and Canadians together to learn about the current Colombian context, analyze Canadian policy towards Colombia and consider future areas of work. It will provide a space for learning, reflection and sharing to advance solidarity work with the Colombian people.

The keynote speakers for “Land, Trade and Democracy” will be:

Ø  Claudia Lopez, Political Researcher. Sister Lopez has done extensive research on the infiltration of paramilitary groups in the Congress and political system in Colombia and is one of Colombia’s leading advocates for democratic development.

Ø  Jorge Palomino, General Coordinator, Indigenous Youth Movement of Northern Cauca, Alvaro Ulcué. The Nasa people of Northern Cauca are an icon of non-violent resistance in the face of Colombia’s ongoing conflict.

The Saturday session will include workshops with presentations on various topics by Colombians and Canadians as well as plenary sessions to discuss future directions for Colombian solidarity work.

Registration is free but space is limited.  Please go to www.codev.brownpapertickets.com to register.
