CUPE 458 celebrates 60 years of public services with donations to Community Services
HOPE—Fraser Valley municipal workers presented three Community Services groups with donations aimed to help fund their youth programs at an event in Hope’s Memorial Park on Thursday, August 16th.
CUPE 458 presented Chilliwack Community Services, Agassiz-Harrison Community Services and Hope Community Services with cheques then CUPE 458 members and Community Services youth faced off in a road hockey game.
The donations are an important part of CUPE 458’s 60th anniversary celebrations, says CUPE 458 President Bryan Bickley.
“CUPE 458 members don’t just work in the Fraser Valley, we also live and raise our families here,” says Bickley. “Youth are the future of tomorrow, they are our future leaders. We appreciate all the work that Community Services does in Fraser Valley communities and we hope that our donations will help enable them to keep doing excellent work.”
Bickley notes that for their anniversary celebrations the local wanted to not only celebrate the work that members do, but they also wanted to support the communities where they work. He says the local decided to make a donation to an organization that supported youth and after doing some research they decided that Community Services would be a perfect fit.
CUPE 458 represents municipal workers in seven communities throughout the Fraser Valley. Members do a variety of jobs including maintenance and protection of water systems, sewer systems, roads, parks, and public buildings, bylaw enforcement, planning, building inspections, clerical and financial services in municipal and district halls, customer service in arenas and pools, and support staff for the RCMP.
