OutGames 2011: CUPE members discuss LGBT issues

VANCOUVER-With thousands of visiting athletes and activists in town for the OutGames and human rights conference, members of CUPE BC’s Pink Triangle working group and other LGBT activists from CUPE took time out earlier this week to discuss issues affecting sexual minorities today.

In a short series of “Pride profiles,” the members talk about issues including gay-straight alliances in schools and efforts to combat cyber bullying, as well as CUPE’s role in supporting its LGBT members.

“It’s great to see so many of our members stepping forward to get involved in defending LGBT rights,” says CUPE BC general vice-president Cindy McQueen, chair of the Pink Triangle working group.

“It’s a sign that we’ve really come a long way as a union.”

McQueen encouraged CUPE members, gay and straight alike, to come out on Sunday (July 31) for the Pride Parade in Vancouver, where CUPE marches annually as part of the Multi-Union Pride contingent.
