From lock-out threat to ratification

QUESNEL—CUPE 1050 members ratified a mediated agreement with the City of Quesnel yesterday. Both parties have agreed not to discuss details of the agreement, pending ratification. Council was expected to ratify the agreement when they met on Tuesday but they have asked for another week.

“We’re waiting for the employer to finalize the process,” says CUPE 1050 president Dan Weiman. “We want to get on with it and continue providing quality public services to Quesnel residents.”

After two strong strike votes and mediation, the City of Quesnel and CUPE 1050 reached the mediated agreement last Friday. The City had threatened to lock out workers and then forced a final offer vote on the same contract members had rejected. The workers sent a strong message with a “no” vote on the final offer and a strong strike mandate.

“The bargaining team knew we had the members behind us 100 per cent,” said CUPE 1050 president Dan Weiman. “Solidarity and a strong strike vote made all the difference.”
