May Day = Community Action Day

May Day = Community Action Day

CUPE members across B.C. are heading out into their communities to mark May Day 2010. Under the banner of Community Action Day, locals and district councils are celebrating International Workers’ Day by hosting creative community events.

“We must recognize and commemorate May Day for the contributions that workers are making today as well as for our historical gains. We are doing that by giving back to the communities we live and work in,” says CUPE BC president Barry O’Neill.

On Vancouver Island, the celebrations include barbeque fundraisers in Port Hardy and Port McNeill sponsored by CUPE 2045 (North Island Schools, Village of Port Alice, District of Port Hardy) with money raised going to the local volunteer fire departments.

In the Interior, CUPE 523 (Okanagan Skaha) is sponsoring a free community swim at the CUPE-staffed Summerland Aquatic and Fitness Centre. In Penticton, the South Okanagan Boundary Labour Council is hosting a public party at the local Gyro Park. Support staff at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops (CUPE 4879) are collecting donations for the Kamloops Food Bank as well as taking donations for the local SPCA.

For seniors around Smithers – Telkwa, CUPE 2145 (Bulkley Valley Schools) is supplying volunteers to help with spring yard work, cleanup tasks, repairs, visits and reading. In North Vancouver, CUPE 389 is holding High Tea for seniors, complete with a surprise “royal visit.”
