Persons with Disabilities Committee

Persons with Disabilities Committee

Working to create more accessible workplaces

This committee provides education and raises awareness about disability issues for members with disabilities, the general membership, and the Executive Board.

The Committee promotes awareness of disability-related issues within CUPE and in the community, supports disability-related events, works with other CUPE BC committees to advance disability issues, works with allies in the communities where CUPE members work and live, and forwards resolutions to the annual CUPE BC convention to advance disability rights.

Ready and able to make a difference

For a number of years, the Committee has promoted the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3rd). Its previous work has included a video, “Ready and Able,” featuring CUPE members who live and work with disabilities. More recently the committee has run a campaign, “Not All Disabilities Are Visible,” to raise awareness around invisible disabilities.

The Committee continues its work to promote disability awareness training within CUPE, encourage members with disabilities to get active in their local, provincial and national CUPE structures, and to encourage locals to bargain equity language in their collective agreements.
