Statement from CUPE BC re Vancouver School Board firing

Statement from CUPE BC re Vancouver School Board firing

BURNABY – Today’s news that Premier Christy Clark has fired the democratically elected Vancouver School Board shows that her education agenda is more about closing schools than providing quality public education, CUPE BC President Paul Faoro said today.

“The Vancouver School Board trustees who stood up to this government’s efforts to close schools and continue underfunding public education in this province deserve our thanks, and I have no doubt that Vancouver voters will agree in the next election,” said Faoro. “This sad attack on local democracy and accountability will demonstrate to all citizens—not just parents with school-age kids—that the BC Liberals are “liberals” in name only and continue to govern solely on behalf of their wealthy and well-connected supporters.

“In the coming days CUPE BC will work closely with the CUPE Locals and other unions that represent workers at the VSB to ensure the trustees who support quality public education are themselves supported.”
