Petition Harper: Stop forcing communities to privatize

BURNABY- CUPE BC has launched a petition to fight back against the lack of federal funding for public infrastructure projects across Canada.  The petition calls for Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the federal government to “unhook” the P3 (public private partnership) strings that are attached to the only federal infrastructure funds for communities made available, those in the unpopular PPP Canada Fund.

Abbotsford joins BC lobby to cut P3 strings from federal infrastructure funding

ABBOTSFORD – The City of Abbotsford has a new mayor who is taking a new, public approach to meeting the city and region’s
future water needs.

Abbotsford resident’s recently rejected the Stave Lake P3 water project by an overwhelming 75 per cent. In turn they also turned down a $65 million grant from the federal government, sending a clear message that this community will not accept federal money with P3 strings attached.

P3 water project sinks in Abbotsford

ABBOTSFORD—A P3 water plan was overwhelmingly rejected in Abbotsford and the former mayor, George Peary, an outspoken P3 supporter was also defeated. 

The $291 million project would have been the largest privately financed undertaking in the water sector in Canada to date.

The Stave Lake referendum question was included on Saturday’s municipal election ballot and 74 per cent of residents voted against the P3 plan.

Residents concerned about the ‘private’ in P3

ABBOTSFORD—City of Abbotsford residents have serious concerns about the Stave Lake P3 deal. That’s the message from the latest Angus Reid poll on the scheme. 

Two-thirds of respondents in the City ordered poll are concerned about the “role of private businesses” (68 per cent) and the “secretive process” (67 per cent) in this P3 deal.

CUPE voices opposition to P3 plan

ABBOTSFORD – More than 200 local residents took time Sunday for a public meeting on Abbotsford’s controversial P3 water plan.

The mostly South Asian audience heard from municipal candidates, residents and local temple and society leaders. The event was sponsored by Water Watch Mission-Abbotsford and the Council of Canadians. Every speaker opposed the City of Abbotsford’s proposed Public Private Partnership for drinking water supply and urged everyone to get out and vote ‘No’ in the P3 referendum on Saturday, Nov.

BEAVER CREEK – Beaver Creek residents are keeping their water public. They saw little value in a proposed P3 water infrastructure plan. They proved it by voting 73 per cent against a pricey P3 plan on Oct. 29.
