Longtime Kamloops union activist honoured

VANCOUVER – Kamloops union leader and peace activist Bill Ferguson was honoured this week at the CUPE National Convention in Vancouver.  Ferguson received a rousing standing ovation from the 2,500 delegates for his 60+ years of service to the union movement. 

Ferguson was a founding member of the Canadian Union of Public Employees back in 1963. He was also a charter member of the Kamloops and District Labour Council in 1956 and remains an executive-member-at-large to this day.

PORT COQUITLAM—In-house waste collection from CUPE 498 has played a key role in making Port Coquitlam among B.C.’s best.

The city of Port Coquitlam was honored in Vancouver yesterday at the Union of BC Municipalities’ annual awards for its continued commitment to waste reduction and online communications.

CUPE Locals help spread the word about literacy

VANCOUVER—CUPE BC and CUPE members from locals 15, 389, 391 and 1004 partnered together this past Sunday (Sept. 25) to celebrate reading and help advocate literacy at the 2011 “Word on the Street” event. 

The festival held downtown at Vancouver Public Library’s main branch, Library Square, and attracts over 40,000 community members.

A warm Okanagan welcome to CUPE

CUPE 338’s newest members and executive board, along with CUPE leadership, met in Kelowna on Monday, March 28.

KELOWNA—Almost one-third of CUPE’s newest members were on hand Monday to attend their first Local 338 meeting.

After the roll call of officers and the reading of the equality statement, CUPE 338 president Brent Soroka introduced the Local’s executive board, CUPE BC secretary-treasurer Mark Hancock and staff.

100 years of public service recognized at City Hall

CUPE 1004, City of Vancouver outside workers unveil commemorative plaque

VANCOUVER— CUPE 1004 members will be joined by Mayor Gregor Robertson at 2:00 pm Tuesday, April 5 at a ceremony in the main council chamber at City Hall to mark the 100th anniversary of services provided by Vancouver’s outside workers.
