Webcast online - Day of Mourning protests 188 workplace deaths in B.C. In 1984, CUPE's National Health & Safety Committee was instrumental in recommending the creation of a National Day of Mourning to recognize these workers.

CUPE Day of Mourning flag hung in Penticton council chambers
PENTICTON—If this year’s events are any indication, the international Day of Mourning message is getting through to employers. Just ask CUPE BC OH&S committee member Marlene Kantz, who was part of a delegation that unfurled CUPE’s bright yellow-and-black Day of Mourning flag in the Penticton city council chambers on April 21.

O’Neill, campus locals say 300 workplace injuries last year ‘unacceptable’

VANCOUVER—With a crowd of approximately 75 university workers in attendance, CUPE BC president Barry O’Neill marked today’s international Day of Mourning with a call to end preventable injuries on a campus that saw 300 work-related injuries last year.

Delta workers were up at the crack of dawn, and gathered at 7:30 this morning

DELTA—Early this morning, employees of the Delta Board of Education paused for a moment to remember the workers who have been injured this past year in Delta. On hand to raise the CUPE Day of Mourning flag were, from left, Val Windsor, Teacher Association president Pauline Evans, CUPE 1091 first vice-president Patti Price, Delta Board of Education health and safety officer Vanessa Ezaki, Teachers Association first vice-president Paul Steer, CUPE 1091 president Colin Pawson, and Delta Board of Education vice chair Teresa Townsley.

Campus locals to honour workers who have lost their lives, urge better job safety

VANCOUVER — CUPE BC president Barry O’Neill will join CUPE members at the UBC campus on Monday (April 28) to honour workers who have died due to work-related injuries and occupational diseases and to stand up for safe working conditions.
