The Liberal attack on: Women

CUPE BC Fact Sheet:

Gordon Campbell has a gender gap. That means that women are a lot less likely to vote for him than men are. No wonder. In the home, women can see the impact of cuts on families and children. In the workplace, they can see the impact of policies aimed just at women.

  • One of the Campbell Liberal's first actions was to eliminate the pay equity program. It would have given women real ammunition in the fight for fair pay. But the Liberal big business cronies didn't like it. They think pay equity should be voluntary. A hundred years ago they thought child labour laws should be voluntary.

  • Women will have a harder time finding day care and it will cost more. The Campbell Liberals are scrapping a before and after school program and cutting subsidies for low-income parents by 20 per cent.

  • B.C.'s Equal Opportunity Secretariat was created to make sure underrepresented groups could find a place in the public service. It encouraged programs like employment equity to make sure women had a chance at good jobs and were paid what they were worth. The secretariat is another victim of Black Thursday.

  • The ministry of public safety and the solicitor general is reducing contracts for the violence in relationships program.

  • The funding freeze for schools and changes in funding will lead to fewer services for special needs children.

  • Funding for women's centres, which provide many services for women, is being ended.
