The private sector does a lot of things well. What it doesn’t do well is finance and deliver public services. There are consequences when we hand management of water and sewage systems, roads and bridges, and hospital services and recreation facilities over to private, for-profit companies.

Privatization breaking news

So much for transparency and accountability in public private partnerships. Veolia Environmental Services has a 25-year contract for waste services with Notts County Council in the UK. However, some nosy citizen asked to see the Council’s accounts for the Veolia contract. The contracts and accounts are usually public. Veolia responded by obtaining an injunction to stopping the Council from revealing the information. The company first had a temporary injunction but is now looking to make it permanent.
